I wrote my proficiency assignment with the intention to create an opportunity, for the person who chose my assignment, to practice writing a formal text, but in a slightly different way. I wanted them to think about how difficult it can be to go from informal to formal.
Frida, who picked my assignment, understood exactly what I was going for and wrote a very good informal text about a day in her life.
I picked Anna´s assignment because I think that it is an important factor to get a chance to practice writing a letter to parents. That is something that you as a teacher must certain will have to do and that you do not practice during your years at the university.
I think that assignment 3 and 4 were very good because I think that it is always rewarding to interact with your fellow classmates and also get the chance to “steal” some ideas!

Assignment 4: Anna´s assignment
Hello everyone!
My name is Johan Krulle and I am going to teach class 6 for the rest of the term.
I am 24 years old and a recent graduate from Karlstad University. I live with my girlfriend in Karlstad and enjoy sports, reading and spending time with my friends and girlfriend.
Since the students are used to a certain style from their previous teacher I am not going to change so much, considering that I are leaving sixth grade soon. Instead I hope to bring energy and a positive thinking to the classroom. One of the things that I would like you parents to contribute with is communication. I will prepare several parent-teachers meeting, the first next week, where I will introduce my self and where I would like you to tell me how you would like to be involved.
My main goal for the term is that every student will reach the goals for the sixth school year, and if we work together I know we can do it!
Welcome to a new and exciting term here at Storskolan!
Best regards Johan Krulle

Assignment 3: Written proficiency assignment
I want you to write a formal text about a typical day in your life.
Use approximately 200 words and make sure that you use the sentence structure and choice of words that you would use when you normally write a formal text.
The goal with the assignment is to practice writing a formal text about an ordinary happening, in other words transforming everyday events into formal text.
Good luck!

Assignment 2: Argumentative writing
I think that the fact that students live on subsistence level should be one of the most important election issues 2010!
The students that attend university have to solve a puzzle everyday. The student loan does not allow us to live carefree and focus on our studies. We frequently have to ask ourselves:
Can I afford this and that this month? If I buy this will I have to eat noodles for the rest of the month? Do I have the money to join my friends for a beer or two?
Questions like these tear on a persons mind and ultimately affect his or hers ability to perform at school.
The fact that a student can not earn as much money as possible through for example a part time job is something that is absolutely incomprehensible to me. If you make too much money you will have to pay CSN when you are finished. Why?
Why can not a student who is receiving a loan from CSN earn as much as they want? It would make life much easier for many students and the fact that worrying about money would not be an issue for many students is reasons enough I think.
A counterargument would be that the part time job would steal concentration that should be focused on the school but I do not buy that. If you have a part time job it is a choice you have made and there for you have to take the consequences but I think student should at least have a chance to make extra money and be able to stretch their monthly budget a bit!

Assignment 1: Formal and informal
Formal text:
Brown was the son of John Brown, a Labour Party-supporting Church of Scotland minister, and Elizabeth Brown. At age 16 he won a scholarship to the University of Edinburgh (the youngest student to enter the university since World War II), where he immersed himself in student politics, eventually becoming chair of the university’s Labour club. Having earned a degree with honours in 1972, he served as a university lecturer, first at Edinburgh (1975–76) and then at Glasgow College of Technology (now part of Glasgow Caledonian University; 1976–80). Brown left academia for an appointment at Scottish TV (1980–83), where he was a journalist and editor in the current affairs department. In 1982 he completed a doctorate in history at Edinburgh; his dissertation was titled The Labour Party and Political Change in Scotland, 1918–29.

Informal text:
But what is it that Gordon did to deserve his current status as tabloid pariah? Did he compliment Nick Griffin on his new haircut? Did he say Bin Laden is ‘Okay once you get to know him’? Instead of kissing babies, did he flat out call them ugly gremlins, right in their mothers’ shocked gobs?
No, Gordon did none of those things. Rather, he made an accurate analysis of an encounter he’d had with an elderly woman from Rochdale, saying it was a disaster, asking why he’d been put to speak to her and, most shockingly of all, calling her a ‘bigot’.

The first text is from Encyplodia Brittanicas article about the prime minister of the United Kingdom Gordon Brown. The second text is from a blog and deals with Gordon Brown´s scandal the other week.
The main differences in the two text is the choice of words. In the formal article they use words and sentences that you probably would not use if you were writing a letter to a friend. Also the fact that in the blogpost he uses contractions, while in the article the write both words instead.
My own text:
Formal:
The National Hockey League (NHL) is a North American ice hockey league which exists of 30 franchised member clubs, 24 of these are based in The United States and 6 are based in Canada. The NHL is by many considered to be the best ice hockey league in the world. At the end of each season the league playoff champion is awarded the Stanley Cup.
Informal:
The NHL is the best hockey league in the world. It´s too bad that the American clubs is so many though, I think it would be great for the league if there were more clubs from Canada.
The team that wins the playoffs gets the Stanley Cup and this year I´m rooting for the Chicago Blackhawks, even if they are from the US.
